Install

Requires Python 3.11+ (3.12 and 3.13 work). Prefer uv, pipx, or a virtualenv. System Python on many Linux distros blocks bare pip install (PEP 668).

Check Python 3.11+

shell
python3 --version

You need 3.11 or newer. Stock macOS often still has 3.9. Installing skillgate-ai with that interpreter fails with:

shell
No matching distribution found for skillgate-ai

Create a 3.12 environment first. The recommended path is uv venv --python 3.12 below.

uv (recommended)

If uv is missing, install it with brew install uv. Then:

shell
uv venv --python 3.12
source .venv/bin/activate
uv pip install skillgate-ai==0.7.9
skillgate version

pip (virtualenv)

shell
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate   # Windows: .venv\Scripts\activate
pip install skillgate-ai==0.7.9

On Ubuntu, python3 -m venv needs the venv package for that interpreter. If creation fails with ensurepip is not available, install the package and create the environment again:

shell
apt install python3.X-venv

Replace X with the minor version from python3 --version. Python 3.12 uses python3.12-venv.

The python3 on PATH must already be 3.11+. If it is 3.9, use uv instead of this virtualenv.

pipx (isolated)

Install pipx first, then the CLI:

shell
brew install pipx
pipx ensurepath
pipx install skillgate-ai==0.7.9
skillgate version

Open a new terminal after pipx ensurepath if pipx is not found.

Verify

shell
skillgate version   # 0.7.9
